Patrick Jones. ( an international, abstract artist )
" What stands out about Nigel as an artist, is his unerring professional commitment, which is in everything he does. As a Painter what stands out is the continuing quality of his work. Each painting is a sort of hymn to positivity, in colour, shape and form. I am proud to be planning to show my work with his in 2021."
Statements can and do change. Clearly they can never explain the work but simply offer a particular context.
Although my work is open to interpretation, it is held together by a common thread ; namely the relationship between the intentional and the unintentional. I often attempt to make the intentional look unplanned and the unintentional appear deliberate.
My paintings are arrived at by a process of action and reaction, creating and destroying, in a cycle of being elsewhere.
I actively seek the accident and the subconscious when painting, in order to avoid the predictable. There is a dialogue between intentional and the unintentional, between the artist and each composition, which leads the work forward. It is this dialogue that I hope makes for a layered and surprising piece; whether it be a 'pure' painting or a set of fragmented pieces of paint.
The cave wall and the canvas, are a means to fix visions and make discoveries of what lies within and hopefully make sense of one's own relationship with what exists externally.
